Creative Thirst Quenched in Zadar

August 24, 2015

From the time we stumbled off the ferry and saw her, the tiny lady in a daisy-print dress holding a sign, handwritten, that said “Sobe,” we knew Zadar would be memorable. We had been told to keep eyes open outside every ferry, bus, and train terminal along the coast for Croatian ladies holding these signs … More Creative Thirst Quenched in Zadar

Let the #christmasmagic🎄 countdown begin. Last night, #lucca was all aglow. 🌟 #lifeintuscany #sognidoro🌙 #luccaitaly #toscanabella #ourtravelstory #winterineurope
What a treat! Today in #italianschool we learned to make #befanini & #biscottidellanonna🍪 + #cantuccini - traditional sweets from Tuscany and Lucca. Though this is a language course, hands-on-learning in the kitchen - while speaking only Italian - beats only sitting in a classroom every day. Plus, ya know, sweets + bubbly! @luccaitalianschool Io provo, io imparo. #learning #exploring #dreaming #lifeintuscany #luccaitaly #fortunate #graziemille❤️
When Matt and I met 20 years ago in Birmingham, AL, at a party in the home of mutual friends, we talked, laughed and danced all the night through. Never did we ever imagine...here we would be...twenty years later, talking, laughing and dancing...this time in Lucca, Italy. 🥂Tonight, we salute the past and all these amazing years, while enjoying the present and dreaming about what’s to come next. Grazie e saluti & Thanks Friends for the encouragement, support and love.
When a classmate in #italianschool mentions not having tasted #buccellatodilucca I knew this must change. Lucca’s famous Buccellato is a cross between cake and bread, sweet and bitter (the latter, thanks to anise). And, no place does it better than #pasticceriataddeucci, where I headed right after class. This beloved shop has been a Lucca landmark since 1881. Now, if I can stop myself from eating the entire treat before sharing with the class!
Moonlight meets twinkly lights meets...#lucca 💫 The nightly walk about town, referred to in Italy as #passegiata, is always lovely, but especially so during #natale🎄
Last night, a stylist friend and I were discussing our shared love of beauty salons and the rarified ecosystem that exists within the walls of every single one, no matter the culture or country. 💗 I told her that I grew up in my grandmother Frances’ “beauty shop” in southern Alabama. My entire adolescence was colored (because I love puns, too. ) by after-school afternoons of sweeping the floor, answering calls and chit- chatting with the wet-set pack. That little shop was its own universe and part of my education. ✈️ Over these years of traveling, I’ve had my “hair done” in parlors in Thailand, Croatia, Spain, Italy and beyond and am always amazed that even though I may not understand the language, I understand everything that’s conveyed in that magic environment where people gather to feel their most beautiful. ✂️ Anyhoo, that conversation inspired me to share this vintage newspaper ad from my Granny’s salon. 💗 💗 💗 #beauty #beautysalonsofinstagram #lovetoyall #goodstuff #grateful #grandmothersrule #womenbusinessowners
Winter walks. #luccaitaly
City & Sky. Today was my 1st visit to #portovenere on Italy’s Ligurian coast. It will for sure not be the last. This #unescoworldheritage village along the famous #gulfofpoets is stunning - and particularly tranquil and charming in winter. Just look at the light!
